Abstract An exercise apparatus allowing interfacing feet movements and physical efforts of a seated user to control the virtual environment, including locomotion of the avatar, is disclosed. The apparatus includes at least two moving members slidably joined to the respective linear tracks, allowing independent movements of user's feet placed on the pedals against adjustable resistance. The parameters of said apparatus usage are detected by sensing of: (i) range of motion, acceleration and pace of moving members, (ii) foot pressure on the pedals and (iii) usage-dependent heat production. The output data of said apparatus usage and hence user's physical activity is computed into the changes of respective parameters in the virtual space, including the avatar locomotion.
