<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a touch panel system in which power consumption is reduced and detection sensitivity is improved, and further to provide a touch panel controller for controlling the touch panel system, and an operation method for the touch panel system. <P>SOLUTION: A touch panel system 1 includes: a state detecting unit 2 for generating state signals each indicating a proximity state of a pointer to detection areas; a position calculating unit 3 for processing the state signals to calculate the positions of one or more pointers on a detection surface P composed by combining the detection areas; and an area setting unit 4 for setting a new effective area on the basis of the calculated positions of the one or more pointers, and setting a new effective area to be a whole surface of the detection surface P at every predetermined timing.
