The end joint for the outer sheath of a cable requires no extra components to form the joint between the ends of the plastics metal laminated sheath. The sheath may consist of aluminium foil (3) covered by a single or double layer of polyethylene (2) or a polyethylene copolymer. Inclined cuts are made in the edge of one laminate to form flaps. Every other flap (7) is folded back on itself. The second end is then placed over the folded-over flaps of the first end. The ends are fixed together by heating and compressing such that the plastics melts and the two metal foils come into electrical contact.
