A hybrid vehicle drive apparatus (1-1) is provided with: an engine (1); a transmission unit including a first planetary gear mechanism (10), a clutch (CL1), and a brake (BK1); and a differential unit including a second planetary gear mechanism (20). By engaging both the clutch (CL1) and the brake (BK1) of the transmission unit, dual-motor EV mode travel driven by a first rotating electrical machine (MG1) and a second rotating electrical machine (MG2) while stopping the engine (1) is enabled. When switching to the dual-motor EV mode travel, first control for implementing negative rotation speed control by the first rotating electrical machine (MG1), second control for engaging one of the clutch (CL1) and the brake (BK1) of the transmission unit after the first control, and third control for engaging both the clutch (CL1) and the brake (BK1) of the transmission unit after the second control are implemented.
