The method involves processing temperature measurements detected in a wall (4) of a liquefied gas tank (1), so as to detect a hotter zone (57) corresponding to a vapor phase (58) of a fluid contained in the tank, and a colder zone (56) corresponding to a liquid phase (48) of the fluid contained in the tank. A filling level (Z0) of the tank is estimated according to a transition zone (68) between the hotter and colder zones. The temperature measurements detected below the estimated filling level are selected and compared with reference data to detect abnormal temperature of the tank. An independent claim is also included for a monitoring system for monitoring a liquefied gas tank by temperature measurements detected in the wall of the tank.
