摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element and device which is easily applicable to various states such as an arbitrary characteristics, an arbitrary use state, and an arbitrary size and shows a continuous and smooth refractive index distribution and satisfactory optical characteristics.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element is implemented which includes a liquid crystal layer provided between a first substrate with a fundamentally transparent first electrode and a second substrate with a transparent second electrode, and for example, at least one electrode comprises a plurality of pixel electrodes arranged two-dimensionally, and an effective refractive index distribution of the liquid crystal layer can be variably adjusted. An active matrix driving method can be applied to the plurality of pixel electrodes independently per pixel, and an arbitrary voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer in each pixel. A double layer comprising a transparent insulating layer and a transparent impedance layer is arranged between the plurality of pixel electrodes and the liquid crystal layer. A matrix drive mode can be variously changed to be able to cope with various use states.
