The method involves determining displacement quantity of a hydraulic pump (P) and a displacement quantity of a hydraulic motor (HM). A displacement quantity difference actual value is determined from the displacement quantity of the pump and the displacement quantity of the motor. A displacement quantity correction value is determined from the displacement quantity difference actual value and a displacement quantity difference reference value. Preset restrictor volume adjustments of the pump and/or the motor are corrected depending on the displacement correction value. The pump and/or the motor are designed as axial piston machines. An independent claim is also included for a hydrostatic transmission.
