PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing and drying machine comprising a heat pump, which is capable of preventing the drying time from prolonging contrary to the user's expectation as much as possible.SOLUTION: The washing and drying machine rotates a rotary tub at a high speed in a prescribed speed region to remove water from the clothes in the rotary tub by a centrifugal force and then starts an operation of a heat pump. The washing and drying machine is provided with control means that, in the case where the speed of the high speed rotation is relatively low in the speed region, sets the operation frequency when starting a compressor to be higher compared to the case where the speed of the high speed rotation is higher than the low speed.
