The method involves monitoring of a conduction state of one of multiple electronic output switch stages (14) by a control- and monitoring unit (15). Another output switch stage is deactivated, particularly opened, if the monitored line condition indicates a fault condition of the control- and monitoring unit. The output switch stage is deactivated by the opening of an electronic switching element (4), if the electronic switching element is closed. The output switch stage is deactivated by suppressing the closing of the electronic switching element, if the electronic switching element is open. An independent claim is included for a device for monitoring a safety switching device for isolating a potentially dangerous machine operation of an electrically controlled machine.
