Preparing ether compounds (I), comprises converting carbonyl compounds (II) in presence of at least one reducing agent comprising compounds having at least one silicon hydride functional group, and at least one catalyst comprising indium- or gallium compounds or salts, and precipitating the catalyst as nitrogen-containing precipitate. Preparing ether compounds of formula (R1-CH 2-X-R2) (I), comprises converting carbonyl compounds of formula (R1-C(=O)-X-R2) (II) in presence of at least one reducing agent comprising compounds having at least one silicon hydride functional group, and at least one catalyst comprising indium- or gallium compounds or salts, and precipitating the catalyst as nitrogen-containing precipitate. X : O, S or NR3; R3 : H or organic group which is optionally bonded with R2; and R1, R2 : organic groups which are optionally bonded with each other. An independent claim is also included for a composition comprising (I).
