<p>A superconducting magnet apparatus comprising at least one superconducting winding (20), an outer vacuum chamber (OVC) (10) housing the at least one superconducting winding (20), at least one thermal radiation shield (12) located between the at least one superconducting winding (20) and the OVC (10), a cryogen vessel (22) positioned within the at least one thermal radiation shield (12) and within the OVC (10), the at least one superconducting winding (20) being positioned outside of the cryogen vessel (22), and at least one refrigerator (26) operable to cool the cryogen vessel (22) to a liquid cryogen temperature and arranged to cool each of the at least one thermal radiation shield (12) to an intermediate temperature between the liquid cryogen temperature and a temperature of the OVC. A substantial portion of an outer surface of the cryogen vessel (22) has a thermal emissivity at the liquid cryogen temperature which is greater than an average surface emissivity of the at least one superconducting winding by at least 0.1.</p> |
