A method for storing a security-relevant data unit in a memory unit and an appropriate memory unit are presented, in the case of which a memory area having a memory content which is invariable at least in normal memory operation is provided before and/or after the memory area for the data unit. Both the memory area for the data unit and the surrounding memory area with the invariable memory content are checked for alterations and the data unit is assumed to be unaltered only if the surrounding memory area with the invariable memory content is also unaltered.
