According to the present invention, a transmission controller determines whether or not the shift is a kickdown. If it is determined that the shift is a kickdown, the transmission controller increases the target line pressure to a first target pressure corresponding to the kickdown-increased torque inputted into the continuously variable transmission, determines whether the line pressure has reached the first target pressure, and upon determining that the line pressure has reached the first target pressure, increases the target line pressure to a second target pressure, which is higher than the first target pressure.
