This fuel cell system supplies an anode gas and a cathode gas to a fuel cell and generates electricity and is provided with: a compressor that is provided in the cathode gas supply pathway and sends the cathode gas to the fuel cell under pressure; a bypass pathway for exhausting cathode gas sent under pressure by the compressor to a cathode gas exhaust pathway by bypassing the fuel cell; a bypass valve, provided in the bypass pathway, for adjusting the flow rate of the cathode gas flowing in the bypass pathway; a system stop unit that stops the fuel cell system by carrying out a prescribed stopping sequence process when stoppage of the fuel cell system is requested; and a stopped period bypass valve control unit that controls the valve body of the bypass valve to a prescribed initialization position during the stopping sequence process and parallel with the sequence process. |
