The method involves arranging a three-dimensional (3D) sensor i.e. light propagation time sensor (22), in a picture plane (B) of an optical system (25) to be characterized. A reference object (40) is arranged in an object plane (G) of the optical system. Distance values (Dxy) of object points (Gxy) of the reference object corresponding to pixels (Bxy) of the sensor are determined for characterization of the optical system. An angle of the optical system with respect to an optical axis is determined from the determined distance values or a determined optical axis of the optical system. An independent claim is also included for a light propagation time camera.
