The extruder (1) has a screw (5) that is rotatably mounted in a cylindrical housing (3). The screw is provided with an external thread having a spindle-shaped crosspiece (19) so that spindle-shaped screw channel (17) of two adjacent web portions, a thread root (29) and the housing is limited. The grooves (33) are formed in an inner surface (31) of the housing in a melting zone longitudinal section (23), and are provided for the passage of the flowable materialfrom high pressure area (37) to low pressure area (35) of the screw channel.
