PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is capable of switching between a pressure-contact state and a separate state of a pair of rotating bodies by considering time required for switching between the pressure-contact state and the separate state of the pair of rotating bodies.SOLUTION: A printing part 2 forms a toner image on a surface of a sheet P on the basis of an image data. A fixing device 20 is constituted of a pair of rollers which perform heating processing and pressing processing on the sheet P on which the toner image is formed. A separation mechanism 34 switches between a pressure-contact state and a separate state of the pair of rollers. A control part 30 determines whether or not a blank period for a blank region on which a toner image is not formed on the surface of the sheet to pass through the pair of rollers is equal to or greater than a prescribed time and if the blank period is equal to or grater than the prescribed time separates the pair of rollers during the blank period. The prescribed time is a total time of a time required for switching the pair of rollers from the pressure-contact state to the separate state and a time required for switching the pair of rollers from the separate state to the pressure-contact state.
