摘要 <p>Plasma treatment for modifying a carbon material necessitates high temperature, so that the plasma treatment causes the deterioration of a carbon material and results in a poor thermal efficiency. The present invention provides a process for manufacturing a carbon material, said process enabling surface modification which does not cause the deterioration of a carbon material and which attains a high thermal efficiency and is thus suitable for mass production. This process includes feeding a modifier compound to the inside of the combustion flame of a combustible material and applying the resulting combustion flame to a carbon material to conduct the surface modification of the carbon material. Since the temperature of the combustion flame of a combustible material is far lower than that of a plasma, the process enables surface modification which is not accompanied with the crystallization (graphitization) of a carbon material. The process can also attain a high thermal efficiency, since a substance to be treated, namely, a carbon material need not be heated to a high temperature. Further, the process can easily impart radicals formed by the decomposition of a modifier compound to the surface of a carbon material.</p>
