A detection system for detecting the presence of a predetermined quantity of a substance such as smoke or carbon monoxide comprises: a first unit 3 comprising a first detector, the unit being in electrical contact with a first portion of a buildings electrical supply lines, for example, via a wall mounted electrical socket 7; and a second unit 9 comprising a second detector, the second unit being in electrical contact with a second portion of a buildings electrical supply lines, for example, via a wall mounted electrical socket 13. At least one of the first and second units is adapted to generate an electrical signal in the event that a predetermined quantity of substance is detected, and transmit the electrical signal along the buildings electrical supply lines, to the other of the first and second units, in order to generation an alarm condition in both the first and second units. In a further aspect, the unit may be a plug through device which enables separate electrical devices to be plugged into the electrical supply via the unit. In an alternative aspect, the unit may provide an indication of the location where the predetermined quantity of substance is detected. |
