A clutch pressure plate actuation mechanism includes a solenoid 70, 76 and a lever 64, 82 pivotable about a fulcrum 66, 86 positioned between the ends of the lever. The solenoid includes a fixed electromagnet 74, 80 and an armature 72, 78 connected to a first end of the lever. The second end of the lever is movable into contact with a clutch pressure plate 42, 46. Attraction of the armature by the electromagnet causes pivoting of the lever about the fulcrum and movement of the pressure plate towards an engaged position. In a dual clutch assembly, the solenoid 80 of one clutch 32 is arranged to act through the friction plate 56 of the other clutch 30. At least part of the armature may be moveable within a recess of the electromagnet. A method of cooling a dry plate clutch and a method of heating the lubricant in a gearbox are also disclosed. The clutch assembly may further comprise a mechanism for selectively latching the pressure plate in an apply direction after energisation of the electromagnet. |
