Embodiments of the invention relate to accessing and modifying settings of a NAND flash memory device. The NAND flash memory device (10) is provided with a flash memory NAND array (40), a register (24) for storing a special mode enable bit, and a controller (14) configured to operate on the flash memory NAND array (40), to select and control operation in either a normal operational mode or in a special operation mode, respectively. Operation of the NAND flash memory device includes setting a special mode enable bit in the register (24) to cause the flash memory device (10) to exit the normal operational mode and to enter a special operational mode.
