PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resin composition suitable for forming an adhesive layer of a sealing material for improving airtightness of an organic EL element or the like; the sealing material made by using the resin composition; and the organic EL element excellent in the airtightness.SOLUTION: A resin composition contains (A) an epoxy resin, (B) a phenol-based curing agent, (C) an oxide of alkali metal and/or an oxide of an alkaline earth metal, (D) a curing accelerator, and (E) an acrylic polymer, and/or a polyester resin. Based on 100 pts.mass of solid content of the resin composition, the content of the component (C) is 5 to 50 pts.mass, and the content of the component (E) is 10 to 90 pts.mass.
