Polysaccharide fibres for wound dressings

The bicomponent polysaccharide fibre comprises alginate and psyllium polymers. The preferred fibre includes an antimicrobial silver salt, especially silver nitrate or silver carbonate. The fibre is produced by extruding or spinning an aqueous mixture into a coagulation bath. The fibre is preferably made by wet spinning an aqueous mixture of alkaline solubilised psyllium and sodium alginate into a calcium chloride bath. The fibre is useful in biomedical applications such as wound management.
