A method and installation for producing a biaxially oriented tube from thermoplastic material, wherein a tube (10) in preform condition having a wall, an inner face, and an outer face is extruded from thermoplastic material using an extruder (1) which is provided with an extruder die head (3) having an inner die member (5), the inner die member forming a lumen in the tube in preform condition, wherein the tube in preform condition is subjected to a temperature conditioning by means of tempering devices, making use of a temperature sensing system with one or more temperature sensors (40a, 40b, 41a, 41b) and of a controllable heat exchange device (16, 16a), the latter being controlled (17) on the basis of a comparison between the temperatures that are measured by the temperature sensing system on the one hand and a target orientation temperature range on the other hand.
