An active electrode is described for use in devices such as energy storage devices, (e.g., supercapacitors and batteries). In a first embodiment, oxide nanoparticles (or other nanoparticles with high electrochemical activity) are dispersed on a plurality of nano-scale carbon structures aligned perpendicular to (or nearly perpendicular to) a conductive material (e.g., metal foil). Additional material, such as carbonaceous material (e.g., activated charcoal) can be dispersed between the nano-scale structured carbons to enhance the electrical interconnection. One energy retention structure is described having a first electrode of the dispersed nanoparticle oxides on aligned nano-scale carbon structures attached to a conductive base, a second electrode of a desired composition (at least containing one conductive layer), and an electrolyte disposed between the first and second electrodes. |
