MATERIALS FOR SELECTIVE RECOGNITION OF ALTERNARIA MYCOTOXINS (ALTERNARIOL AND ALTERNARIOL MONOMETHYL ETHER)

Alternariol and alternariol monomethyl ether are two of the toxins produced in greatest amounts by fungi of the family Alternaria. They occur frequently in foodstuffs and continued consumption thereof may have negative effects on human health and therefore it is important to develop effective detection methods that prevent the introduction of said organisms into the food chain. The present invention describes a method for preparing organic polymeric materials that act as selective alternariol and alternariol monomethyl ether adsorbents. As templates, the polymers use molecules with a structure similar to that of the mycotoxins, which are simple to prepare, robust and inexpensive. They may be used in the determination of alternariol mycotoxins present in water, foodstuffs, horticultural produce, fruits and derivatives (juices, musts, wines, etc.) and other matrices where the mycotoxins may be present.
