PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To early and securely perform independent displacement to an intermediate lock phase at the time of engine starting.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine includes a variable valve timing mechanism having an intermediate lock mechanism. When the intermediate lock mechanism is operating at the time of engine starting (S101:NO), a waste gate valve is opened (S103) to improve the warm-up performance of a catalyst. In contrast, when the intermediate lock mechanism is not operating at the time of engine starting (S101:YES), the waste gate valve is closed (S102) and a back pressure of the internal combustion engine is raised to control a rise of engine rotational speed, thereby increasing the amplitude of a relative oscillation due to a cam torque change of two rotors in the variable valve timing mechanism and raising the operability of the intermediate lock mechanism. |
