The method involves detecting a surface area of a side surface of a material stack by a measuring head (16). Alignment of the surface area to a stopper unit (14) is determined. A conveying belt (44), a roller tape and a plate-like base element (48) are adjusted depending on the determined surface area alignment such that the surface area alignment to the stopper unit exhibits desired alignment. Alignment of a side surface (10) is determined in a contact manner. A circular disk-shaped sensing disk or sensing points is supported as the measuring head. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for aligning a material stack to a reference area.
