The invention relates to a device and method for continuous casting of a large-format steel strip (2). The problem addressed by the invention is that of representing a simple, robust and uncomplicated device for the low-cost casting of large and heavy cast strips. This problem is solved by a device comprising - a gripper carriage (6) with a clamping device (6a), a separating device (7) and a first drive (6b), wherein the clamping device (6a) can clamp the strip (2), the separating device (7) can cut the strip (2), and the first drive (6b) can drive the gripper carriage (6) in a vertical direction in order to pull the strip (2) out of the mould (1); - a holder carriage (8) with a holding device (9) and a second drive (8a), wherein the holder carriage (8) is downstream of the gripper carriage (6) in the direction of casting (3), wherein the holding device (9) can hold a lower end of the strip (2), and the second drive (8a) can drive the holder carriage (8) in a vertical direction; - a removal device (10) for removing a separated strip (2').
