PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen generator capable of generating hydrogen by bringing a prescribed amount of a hydrogen generating agent into contact with a hydrogen generation accelerator with a simple mechanism, and controlling the hydrogen generation amount, and to provide a method for operating the hydrogen generator.SOLUTION: A hydrogen generating agent 16 is formed by sealing NaH, LiH or KH in an aluminum container. A material capable of dissolving the aluminum container is supplied into a reaction vessel 12 upon start of a hydrogen generator 11, and brought into contact with the lower end of the hydrogen generating agent 16 to dissolve the aluminum container, and to thereby expose NaH, LiH or KH. A hydrogen generation reaction is continued, while securing contact between the hydrogen generating agent 16 and a reaction solution. A supply amount or a discharge amount of the reaction solution in the reaction vessel 12 is controlled, while monitoring a pressure in the reaction vessel 12 or a temperature and a concentration of the reaction solution, to adjust the liquid level of the reaction solution, and to thereby control the hydrogen generation amount. |
