The starter (1) has an electric machine formed as an initiator motor (2) and two batteries (4, 5) exhibiting a battery device (3) and a control device (8). The battery device is connected with the initiator motor. The control device is adapted to start only when one of the batteries is electrically connected with the initiator motor while the other battery is switched-on with time delay and emits no power at the start. The time delay of the latter battery is selected before compression of a combustion engine takes place.
