Crude ether is purified by washing with a bisulphite solution in two or more, preferably three, steps in a continuous process, in which the ether and the bisulphite solution are conducted in countercurrent so that the crude ether is mixed with relatively contaminated ether from the mixing phase of the following step, separated therefrom and mixed in the said following step with less contaminated solution and so on until the nearly purified ether is mixed with fresh bisulphite solution. For an sthetic purposes the purified ether is then washed with water, dried and rectified. |
