The vehicle (100) has a covering (104) which forms an outer shell (102) of the vehicle, and a protecting device (116) for attenuating an impact of a colliding object (112) on the vehicle. The protecting device has a drive unit (148), by which a catch element (122) is extendible along the two clamping elements (120) arranged in the tight position and is moved from a rest position in a protective position. The catch element is arranged in the rest position within or immediately on the outer shell of the vehicle. An independent claim is included for a method for attenuating an impact of a colliding object on a vehicle.
