The supercharger has a turbine (18) arranged in an exhaust gas tract (16) and driven by exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine. A compressor (14) is arranged in a fresh air inlet (12) and driven by the turbine. A communicating passage (22) is formed from the fresh air inlet to the exhaust gas tract. The communication passage is selectively releasable and lockable by a shutoff device (24) e.g. shutoff valve or control valve, which is arranged in the communicating passage. The communicating passage is formed by a tube or a casting channel.
