[Class 83 (iii)] In mounting tools in chucks of the frictionalgrip split-collet type, any rotation of the tool relatively to the collet or chuck body operates to produce axial pressure on the collet to increase the grip on the tool and to counteract any tendency towards axial outward movement of the tool. In Fig. 1 the collet 4 is caused to grip the fluted end-mill 14 by the conical surface 5 of a ring 7 screwing on the body 2. The end of the tool shank is screwed at 10 and engages in a screwed collar 11 held against rotation on the body by a pin 12. If the tool tends to slip in the collet the collar 10 is forced downwardly on to the top of the collet thereby increasing the grip produced by the conical surface 5. At the same time the tool is forced axially inwards thus resisting any tendency of the flutes to cause the tool to be drawn out of the collet. In a modification the screw threads are formed in the collet itself which is held against rotation in the body by the pin 12. In another modification, Fig. 5, the screw-threads 15 engaging the screwed collar are formed on a separate member having a tang connection 16 with the tool shank. In another modification, Fig. 6, the screwed end 10 of the tool shank screws into a tapped hole 18 in the body and any slipping of the tool causes a collar 19 to force the collet inwards to increase the grip produced by the conical surface 5a of the body. In a further modification, Fig. 9, a stud 21 having right and left hand threads separated by a collar 23 has one thread screwing in the body and the other in the tool shank. If the tool shank slips relatively to the chuck body the collar 23 forces the collet outwardly to increase the grip. In a modification of the form shown in Fig. 6 a shoulder between the thread 10 and the shank engages a necked part of the collet to move the latter into the body portion. In a modification of this latter arrangement a stud 28, Fig. 11, screws into the body and into the tool shank and a shoulder 24 moves the collet inwardly if slipping occurs.
