PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for diagnosis of failure in an engine, capable of reducing diagnostic manhours, by easily determining whether or not the occurrence of a misfire is caused by mechanical failure and in which cylinder the mechanical failure is caused. SOLUTION: The method and device 14 for diagnosis of failure in the engine 16 specify a cylinder coincident between a misfire occurrence cylinder indicated by a failure code and a compression pressure insufficient cylinder determined in a cranking rotation state as a repair necessary cylinder, by determining the compression pressure insufficient cylinder being insufficient in compression pressure based on a variation value Δω, by detecting the variation value Δω of angular velocity of a crankshaft 24 with every cylinder 22 in the cranking rotation state, by generating the cranking rotation state of rotating the crankshaft 24, while stopping an explosion in the respective cylinders 22.
