An image reproducing apparatus and method for decoding an interest region are provided to reduce a loss of a memory by removing the necessity of decoding a region which is not desired by a user. A region setting unit(226) sets at least one interested region in an input image according to a user input. A region extracting unit(227) extracts an image corresponding to at least one interested region as set from the input image. A signal processing unit(230) decodes the image extracted from the image extracting unit and outputs the decoded image. The region setting unit sets the interested region by blocks or coordinates of pixels. When interested regions set by the region setting nit overlap with each other, the controller performs decoding on the image corresponding to the overlap region only one time. In setting the interested region, the image setting unit does not set an interested region in I frame. A controller(245) controls the whole operation of an image reproducing apparatus according a user command inputted through an operation unit(205) by using a control algorithm stored at a storage unit(215). |
