651,177. Extracting metals. RYSELIN. J. W., and BRYK, P. B. Sept. 7, 1948, No. 23546. Convention date, April 3, 1947. [Class 82(i)] Sulphide - containing raw materials, especially those containing copper with or without nickel, are smelted in a combustion chamber 1 by feeding the finely divided raw material downwardly, from a hopper 8, concurrently with pre-heated air from a burner 10. The matte and slag or the metal and slag fall on to the furnace hearth 2 and are tapped off while the hot flue gases flow along a horizontal path into a flue 3 and pass through an air pre-heater 4 and a concentrate drier 7. The quantities of material and air may be accurately regulated by means of control devices 9 and 6 respectively. The calorific value of the raw material may be increased by adding a material of high calorific value, e.g., pyrites. |
