696,773. Machine tool details. URWICK, W. D. Dec. 3, 1951 (Dec. 6, 1950], No. 29873/50. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] Means for preventing relative rotation between a shaft 12 and a member 11 slidable thereon comprises a wedge-shaped key 10 engaging two keyways in said shaft and member, the keyway in the shaft having one keybearing surface 13 in a radial plane of the shaft and the keyway in said member having a keybearing surface 14 aligned with said radial plane, and means such as a screw 15 for loading the key in a direction inclined to the said plane to retain it in rigid engagement with both of said surfaces. The slight freedom of movement of the key may be adjusted by screws 16, and a pad of brass &c. may be inserted between the key and screw 15. In a modification (not shown), the key 10 extends along the entire length of the keyway in the shaft and the member 11 is slidable thereon. The invention is shown applied to a combined lathe and milling machine having a bed 11a vertically movable on a pillar 12. To use the machine for milling, the clamping screws 15a are released and the bed 11a lowered by a hand wheel 22 and screw 23. The work is mounted on the slide 21 or the slide is removed and the work clamped on a cross slide 27. The cutter is mounted on the mandrel 24. |
