Leather, leather splits, or leather substitutes consisting of impregnated fibrous materials, are coated by applying thereto in a thin layer a thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride mixed with a plasticiser such as dioctyl phthalate, heating the applied layer under pressure while cooling the uncoated side of the leather, and allowing the product to cool while still under pressure. The leather may be dehumidified by cautious heating before coating. The cooling plate upon which the uncoated side of the leather rests may be covered with fibrous material such as felt, asbestos, or mineral wool to permit escape of vapours The heating plate, or a thin metal sheet placed between it and the coating, may be highly polished, roughened by etching or sandblasting, engraved, or grained and the leather sheet may be grained before coating. The heating and subsequent cooling may be performed in the same press, in separate presses, or in adjacent sections of the same press, one half of the upper pressure plate being heated, the other half cooled. Insulation may be provided between the two sections of the plate. The thermoplastic may be applied as a foil or a pasty composition. which may be applied to the pressure plate and transferred from it to the leather. The coating may be applied in two or more layers, e.g. a first coating containing a large proportion of plasticiser may be followed by a top coating containing less plasticiser. The two coatings may be films which are stuck together before applying to the leather. Penetration into the leather may be enhanced by the addition to the coating composition of a volatile mineral oil.
