The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1), in particular of a motor vehicle, having at least one fresh air line (6) for supplying fresh air to cylinders (4) of the internal combustion engine (1), having at least one exhaust line (11) for discharging exhaust gas from the cylinders (4), having at least one exhaust-gas recirculation line (16) which fluidically connects the exhaust line (11) to the fresh air line (6), having an exhaust-gas recirculation cooler (19) which is arranged in the exhaust-gas recirculation line (16), and having a filter element (29) which is arranged in the exhaust-gas recirculation line (16) and which serves for filtering out particles entrained in the recirculated exhaust gas. The efficiency of the exhaust-gas recirculation can be improved if the filter element (29) in the exhaust-gas recirculation line (16) is arranged downstream of the exhaust-gas recirculation cooler (19). |
