PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is less expensive, can suppress a ghost while maintaining satisfactory image quality, and can obtain an image maintaining satisfactory density and gradations for a long time. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an electrophotographic photosensitive member 1; a contact charger 2 in contact with the electrophotographic photosensitive member for charging the electrophotographic photosensitive member; a charging voltage applying means 31 for applying direct current voltage to the contact charger; a charging current detector 32 for detecting electric current flowing through the contact charger; a pre-exposure device 10 for exposing the electrophotographic photosensitive member to light to remove residual charge on the electrophotographic photosensitive member, and includes a pre-exposure light amount controller 33 for controlling an exposure light amount of the pre-exposure device in image formation based on the results of detection by the charging current detector when the exposure light amount of the pre-exposure device is changed with direct current voltage applied from the charging voltage applying device to the contact charger during non-image formation.
