A screen fence (200; 200a) comprises a first channel (10, 10a) having an open front face and a second channel (10, 10a) having an open front face which opposes the open front face of the first channel. A plurality of spaced apart slats (100) extend between the two channels, each slat having one end located in the first channel and an opposite end located in the second channel. A spacer element (50) is located in each channel between each adjacent pair of slats separating the slats from each other. The spacer comprises a body portion having a plurality of faces including a front face (57), a rear face (54), a top face (56) and a bottom face (58). The rear face (52) of the spacer defines a recess (52) extending from the top of the spacer to the bottom of the spacer.
