PURPOSE: An apparatus for using the waste heat of a ship and reducing nitrogen oxide and an operation method thereof are provided to utilize the waste of the ship by having a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) and an economizer and to satisfy regulations on back pressure trip and nitrogen oxide emission. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for using the waste heat of a ship and reducing nitrogen oxide comprises a branched exhaust line (110), an SCR (130), an economizer (140), and a damper (120). The branched exhaust line exhausts waste gas generated from an engine to the outside of a ship. The SCR reduces the nitrogen oxide of the waste gas to nitrogen and water. The economizer generates steam using the waste heat of the waste gas. The damper selectively supplies the waste gas to the SCR or the economizer.
