PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a photographic image with a high spatial resolution from plural parallax images.SOLUTION: In an image generating method, an output image is generated from an input image acquired by a photographic element in which plural pixels having plural sub-pixels receiving a flux of light passing through different pupil portion regions of an image formation optical system are aligned. The method has: a step of generating plural parallax images for each different pupil portion region; a step of generating plural pixel shift images by differently shifting each of the plural parallax images according to a virtual image formation face of the image formation optical system different from an imaging surface on which the photographic element is arranged; and a step of generating an output image of a higher resolution than that of the parallax image from the plural pixel shift images by super-resolution processing.
