Identifying interference in a heterogeneous wireless network

A method of identifying interference in a heterogeneous network comprises detecting an increase in a packet error rate (PER) S310 in a wireless connection between a first base station and a first wireless device, comparing a reference signal power (RSRP) received by the first wireless device from the first base station with a threshold value S320, and determining that the increase in error rate is due to interference from a wireless connection between a second base station and a second wireless device if the reference signal power is greater than the threshold S330. Signal strength in the network may be reduced in response to the interference. If the reference signal power is less than the threshold, then the increase in error rate is attributed to channel losses S340 and the bit rate of the connection between the first base station and first wireless device is decreased, e.g. by reducing the modulation coding scheme (MCS).
