PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optical elements required for simultaneously achieving reduced loss of an optical circuit and high integration.SOLUTION: A third waveguide core 3 whose height and width vary is inserted for smoothly coupling two waveguide cores 1, 2 for which heights and widths of cores are different. In the third waveguide core 3, a polarization rotator for mutually rotating polarization of a waveguide mode between a TE mode and a TM mode is inserted. Thus, optical elements made proper in terms of the heights of cores and polarization are mixed and arranged in an optical circuit on a single SOI substrate. |
