Staphylococcus aureus protein 5G1 (I) is used to assay biological samples in vitro for the presence of antibodies produced as a result of a Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis infection on implanted foreign material. Polypeptide (I) with SEQ ID NO:2 (defined sequence of 277 amino acids given in the specification) is used to assay biological samples in vitro for the presence of antibodies produced as a result of a Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis infection on implanted foreign material.
