Separating a mixture comprising ethylene glycol and 1,2-butanediol, comprises: distilling the mixture with an azeotropic agent comprising a [1,3]dioxolane compound of formula (I) to obtain a material flow comprising ethylene glycol and azeotropic agent, where the material flow is held steady to delaminate and to separate the mixture enriched in ethylene glycol; and further distilling the mixture to obtain ethylene glycol.
