The method involves identifying a lane change intention (29) of the driver (3), and determining a convoy speed (11) of the convoy of vehicles. The actual speed (13) of the motor vehicle (1) is manipulated such that it differs from the convoy speed to an extent to a maximum relative speed (33). The actual speed is regulated to the reference speed (41). Gaps in the target lane are detected while regulating the actual speed to the reference speed. The lane change is automatically carried out when one of the suitable gaps is detected. An independent claim is included for an assistance device for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle during a lane change from an actual traffic lane to a target traffic lane with a convoy of vehicles.
